Considered to be the lifeline of Telangana, the Musi River is now turned into a polluted with toxic materials and effluents apart from household waste. The rivulet flows from the Anantagiri hills in Vikarabad district and joins river Krishna at Wazirabad in Nalgonda district.

A big number of industries and pharmaceutical companies day-in and day-out release effluents into the river, despite there are checks and restrictions. This apart, even the civil waste is also being dumped on the banks of the river converting it as dumping yard. Despite the claims of the controlling authorities over water pollution, the civil society activists claim that people’s health is at stake.

With the growing importance for the City of Hyderabad world over, the water sources for the people of Hyderabad gets prominence and international agencies are employing people for impact studies. These studies consistently blame industrial, pharmaceutical pollutants and domestic waste being released into the stream. But neither State or Central governments have not made any big step to stop gross release of pollutants in to the stream.

Keeping this in mind, the incumbent Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy got assurance from Port of London, during his tour to London, to rejuvenate the river Musi.

Once it flows like a river

Musi had rich history. It flows with full scale during early 19s. As per the history, on 28th September 1908, the water levels of the river rose to 16 feet and flooded the then City of Hyderabad. Subsequently, the river was encroached and built concrete stretchers and the river front was shrunk into a waste-water drain dividing the old and new city.

It is not out of place to say here that the successive governments have just shown lip-sympathy about the plight of the people living both sides of the Musi River suffering pollution, but never took any serious step to mitigate their sufferings. For instance, the present Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) was built on the river bed, where there used to be a Jasmine garden. Whenever there was

From Puranas

As per Sri MadBhagavatha, Muchukunda is the son of King Mandhata of the ikshvaka dynasty. Indra, the King of the Devas sought Muchukunda’s help in defeating the Asuras, and in the ensuing war Muchukunda defeated the Asuras. Indra was extremely grateful to the king and offered him a boon of his choice. Muchukunda simply wished for a good rest after the long battle and Indra granted him his boon of sleep, and stated that if anyone disturbed his sleep, Muchukunda can burn them to ashes by just fiercely looking at them. Muchukunda identified the Tapovan, and took rest in a cave, around the present day Ananthagiri hills, near Hyderabad. Thus the river originating in Anantagiri hills came to be known as Muchukunda river and flows through present day Bhagyanagar.

In Dwapara Yuga, Kalayavana’s aiming to destroy the Yadavas and therefore he attacked Dwaraka.  Bhagwan Sri Krishna did not wish the innocent civilians to bear the brunt of the war, and moved away from Dwaraka. Kalayavana followed him, desirous of a fight with Sri Krishna. Krishna led him to Anantagiri Hills area and into the cave where Muchukunda was sleeping.   Kalayavana followed Krishna inside the dark cave, and found Muchukunda who is in deep sleep mistaking him as Krishna and he kicked him, King Muchukunda woke up, the anger in him came out as fire through his eyes and burnt Kalayavana to ashes.

Sri Krishna blessed the river Muchukunda to be a tributary to the Jeevanadi, Krishna, till the end of Kaliyuga. He blessed the Tapovana land of Muchukunda that it will always be a sacred place and would remain dear to him, whenever he is tired, he would come and take rest here! it is believed by devotees that Sri Venkateswara on his journey from Tirumala Tirupathi to Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple rests in the region, because of the boon he gave to his devotee Muchukunda.

In order to revitalise the river, the Telangana government announced the Musi Riverfront Development Project in the year 2017.
