NDA government notified the Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024, thus enabling to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which was passed by the Parliament in December 2019. Through amendment the government made two changes – facilitate citizenship to undocumented migrants belonging to six non-Muslim communities namely – Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian – who arrived from neighbouring countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. These people must enter India on or before December 31, 2014.
The persons seeking from Citizenship has to upload three crucial documents:
One document issued by the government authorities in the three countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, one document issued by the Indian authorities, a sworn affidavit declaring the country of origin and date of entry in India along with eligibility certificate issued by known local community institution.
The persons arguing for Pakistani minority migrants say that there are about 80,000 applications are pending before the Indian authorities since 2010. While Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah mentioned at the time of the bill is passed in Rajya Sabha that the legislation would benefit ‘lakhs and crores’, but it is understood from the authorities that about handpicked 31,000 persons will be immediate beneficiaries.
The Hindus, Sikhs came from Afghanistan and Pakistan using Long term visas and pilgrim visas will be benefit through this notification. The persons came from Bangladesh, a section of the Matua sect, will be benefited. The people migrated and listed in the National Register of Citizens, in Assam will be benefited.
The real figure will only be known once the Act put to operation.
