2024: Year of elections across globe

As per the report of International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ Election Guide, this year 2024, the world will see parliamentary or Presidency or major assembly elections across globe in around 60 countries including the world largest democracies such as US and India.

Especially, most of the neighbours Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka besides United States, which will impact of India’s foreign policy. The political parties who are expected to complete in the forthcoming general elections need to factor the foreign policy. The India’s foreign policy is to be decided by the changes in the governments that are coming up in global majors and countries in the global south.

For instance, Bangladesh is scheduled to go to poll on January 7 and the elections in Bhutan on January 9, Pakistan polls scheduled coming February. While in Bangladesh, the polls expected to go one-sided favouring Sheikh Hasina led Awami League, considering Khaleda Zia led Bangladesh National Party decided to boycott the polls.

On the other-hand, there would be keen contest between People’s Democratic Party and Bhutan Tendrel Party.

In Pakistan, with the Imran Khan candidature was disqualified by the Election Commission from both the constituencies where he filed nomination, the probable candidate would be former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Interestingly, Mr Sharif had revealed his preference in favour of India.

Coming to Sri Lanka, it is still not known which way the next government will take sides. As of now, with the financial support from India the island nation Sri Lanka is more stable. The coming elections could change its course with Delhi.

After India polls, the US campaign season will start. Taiwan elections will determine the course of global politics of China, while Russian presidential elections will see President Vladimir Putin getting fifth term. France, UK and European general polls all will impact various bilateral issues including immigration, trade agreements, investment plans etc.
