More often, the Budget speeches reflect political statement of the party in power, and it will be likely when general elections are round-the-corner. However, the budget speech of the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman carefully focused on the decadal growth, controlled inflation and a bouquet of welfare measures.
This is here sixth Budget speech and first interim budget. The budget envisaged that the growth story would continue, however, there are no straight proposals or announcements. Her critics portrayed the speech as ‘jugglery of words’, but she cannot make more than this as it is just a “pure statement of account”. However, she promised all through that the people’s aspirations will be fulfilled in the full budget, which she claims to be presented by her, under the next government.
There are some promises-kind hints like urban poor housing schemes, rural housing and solar solutions etc. She further expressed the government’s proposal to work with the States in furthering the reforms. In all possibilities, the full budget will be presented by the next government in the month of July.
The government is proposed a committee to consider challenges being faced by the country in terms of growing population and demographical changes. She said that the ‘social justice’ as new paradigm for effective governance. This would address systemic inequalities in the societies. All these are still in the drawing board, unless a proper policy is derived one cannot comment on it.
However, this budget speech is giving a road-map for the NDA, which is more confident to win the forthcoming 2024 general elections and once again sit on the driving seat.
